I’ve picked two rescues in my area to receive the money. I will divide my donation from each sale of an e-book or paperback between the two of them. In turn, the rescues help me by promoting my books to their animal rescue contacts throughout the state and country.
The rescues are:
- Sylvia’s Animal Sanctuary in Owingsville, Ky. This organization rescues both dogs and cats in Bath County, but primarily helps dogs.
- TLC Rescue in Clearfield, Ky. This rescue helps both dogs and cats in Rowan County, but it is the only group helping cats that end up at the Tri-County Animal Shelter where they may be euthanized.
How much per book will I donate to the rescues? In the interest of transparency, I’ve broken it down below.
Both my mystery, Catch A Falling Star (An Eden Mystery), and my romance, The Boy Next Door, are priced at $3.99 for the e-book edition. I make $2.72 from each sale. I will donate one dollar from each sale to be shared between the two rescues.
Paperbacks from amazon.com and other online retailers
The paperback edition of Catch A Falling Star (An Eden Mystery) is priced at $11.99. When a copy is purchased at amazon.com, I make $3.39. I will donate a total of $2.00 to be divided between the two rescues.
The Boy Next Door is priced at $10.99 for the paperback edition. When a copy is purchased at amazon.com, I make $3.03. I will donate a total of $2.00 to be shared between the two rescues.
Paperbacks from the CreateSpace store
Amazon provides each of its authors a CreateSpace store for their paperback editions. Purchases made through the store earn the author a higher royalty. For any paperback editions purchased through my CreateSpace store, I will donate a total of $3.00 to be divided between the two rescues. I haven’t yet released the paperback of my romance, so I don’t have a CreateSpace store for it, but the address for my mystery is: https://www.createspace.com/4847927.
Paperbacks I sell
I plan on selling paperbacks at book signings, etc., for $10.00 each. The cost to me of author copies and shipping costs vary depending on how many books are ordered at a time, so I can’t say for sure how much royalty I will make on each. However, I should be able to donate a minimum of $2.00 to be split between the two rescues.
Paperbacks sold through bookstores
I make a lower royalty through third-party sales. I’m not sure at this time how much that will be, but I’m sure I can donate at least $1.00 to be divided between the two rescues. If possible, I will donate more.
I will make periodic posts on this blog to report on the progress of this fundraising/promotion effort. While there have been a few October e-book sales before my announcement, they are so few that I’m embarrassed to post the amounts. But small though they are, I will make a donation from each of them. I hope that I’ll have better—and bigger—results to post soon.
Until then—buy a book! Or if you don’t want to buy a book, but still want to support these rescues, make a donation on their websites. These rescues need help to keep doing good for the animals. BTW, both rescues are always looking for good foster homes for their animals!
